Needlework + Patch Making
DATE: Saturday, March 15, 2 pm - 6 pm
INSTRUCTOR: Natalie Salhanick

Mysterious and beautiful, moths are an ideal subject for a study in fashion embroidery techniques used in French ateliers and all over the world. Learn a few basic stitches to create texture and sparkle quickly and easily in your embroidery. You will learn to create a patch that can be applied to anything you want from jean jackets to notebooks. Students will receive a hoop fully prepared with tulle and pre-cut felt ready to stitch, garment quality sequins and beads, a bobbin of Gutterman thread, either DMC or Anchor stranded cotton, two John James embroidery needles in size 10 and 8, and chenille thread all in handpicked colors. Each kit and moth will be completely unique to reflect your personality.

OPTIONAL: You may want to bring a thimble, a needle threader, a frixion or fabric marker and reading glasses if you feel you may need these items.

Everything you need to complete this project is provided in the kit, so feel free to show up empty handed too. We will go over the basics of hand embroidery to get you started so don't worry if you've never touched a needle before. You CAN do this! We will be learning the techniques, long and short stitch, couching, backstitch with sequins and several more techniques to make your moths sparkle and shine. Embroidery takes time and should not be rushed. We will work on the patch and learn everything you need to know to finish your moth at home.
