Location: 2313 Beatrice St. Suite #100
Instructor: Lisa Huffaker
James Castle (1899 – 1977) was a self-taught artist from a small town in Idaho, whose work has come to be recognized as an important contribution to 20th century art, though he had little or no contact with the art world during his lifetime. Born deaf, he never learned to read, write, or speak, but created thousands of drawings, sculptures, and artist’s books, using humble found materials in remarkably inventive ways. Using soot gathered from the woodstove and dyes leached from colored papers, he created books full of human beings, houses, rooms, and mysterious invented text that both evoked and radically differed from the printed language Castle saw all around him, but could not read. In this workshop, we will bind artist’s books from found materials, and fill the pages as we explore Castle’s profoundly personal methods and themes. Participants will leave with a unique book to continue filling as part of an ongoing practice, and a fresh sense of the possible.

She is currently working on a book of visual poetry, transforming a women’s "self help" book from 1963 through collage and poetic erasure. 65 pieces from the project have been published so far, and the manuscript-in-progress was exhibited internationally as part of TU Delft and Cornell Tech’s 3rd Workshop on Obfuscation. She comes from a background of classical singing; she holds a Master’s degree in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory, and sings with The Dallas Opera.
