You’ve fallen in love with books before; now it’s time to devour one! Join us as we send librarians’ eyebrows through the roof, transforming old books through radical acts of art. We’ll alter individual pages with poetic erasure, collage, drawing, and folded inclusions, and carve deep into the text block to imbed talismanic objects into the body of the book. Whether we envision these alterations and objects as hidden contraband or a stunning new story, our books will mean something they have never meant before.

Our supplies will include a selection of old books, an array of tiny, curious objects and small tin boxes to collect them in, wondrous bits of collage paper, and ephemera ranging from vintage postage stamps to faded photographs. Each participant will leave with a unique artwork that is both a book and an art object, to be read both as a work of literature and a complicated sculpture. Join us as we reimagine and expand the very meaning of this wondrous object we call a book.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Lisa Huffaker creates poetry, collage, assemblage, artist’s books, and many combinations of these. Her poetry appears in Pleiades, Diode, 32 Poems, Michigan Quarterly Review, CTRL+V, DIAGRAM, Cincinnati Review, THRUSH, Phoebe, and other journals. She was recently a finalist for Dallas Poet Laureate, and leads community writing projects as Teaching Artist in Residence at the Writer’s Garret. Her work as a teaching artist brings her to the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and The Dallas Contemporary. Her assemblages have recently been exhibited at Ro2 Art and Bath House Cultural Center. She is currently working on a book of visual poetry, transforming a women’s "self help" book from 1963 through collage and poetic erasure. 65 pieces from the project have been published so far, and the manuscript-in-progress was exhibited internationally as part of TU Delft and Cornell Tech’s 3rd Workshop on Obfuscation. She comes from a background of classical singing; she holds a Master’s degree in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory, and sings with The Dallas Opera.
