Join Aaron Sanders Head for an exploration of hand-piecing quilt blocks!

Learn the art of hand-piecing quilt blocks. Each two hour session will cover the basics of piecing one style of block and participants will leave with a finished (or in-progress) 8 inch block for each session. Aaron will show examples of finished objects and quilts using these blocks. This class is great for beginners or those who are more experienced who want to add more techniques to their practice.

Saturday 1-3pm Session 1 - Nine Patch
Nine patch is one of the most basic block styles within quiltmaking, but its structure allows for infinite experimentation. Learn to make this old standard in several ways, and how to add your personality to your designs.

Saturday 4-6pm Session 2 - Pineapple
Pineapple blocks look very traditional, but by adding in our own styles, we can create contemporary spins on this old favorite. I'll share a technique of making these blocks using only squares, and of using smaller patchwork pieces to create a larger motif.

Sunday 11am-1pm Session 3 - Folded Log Cabin/Manx Block
The quilt block is a distinctive take on a log cabin block, utilizing a series of unique but easy measurements based on the hand of the maker, making each block unique to the person who created it. Traditionally the fabric was torn, not cut. A simple folding technique gives this block a gorgeous, textural, heavy finish and stitches up quickly. Aaron will be demonstrating the traditional way of sewing this by hand, but stitchers will easily see how this can be done on a machine, if so desired at home.

Sunday 2-4pm Session 4 - Improvisational Hand Piecing
Learn to use a foundation square to stabilize your improvisational hand-piecing, and learn a few strategies for getting started and overcoming fears of improv.

Each session will yield an 8 inch block, that can then be used to create a larger quilt, or a small sampler. Classes can be taken separately to learn one block technique, or take all 4 sessions and spend 2 days learning to hand-sew quilts.
